RESUMO

Curcumin, a natural dye found in the Curcuma longa rhizome, commonly called turmeric, is used as a photosensitizer in acrylamide-based photopolymers for holographic data storage. We studied the absorbance of photopolymer films that show two absorption bands due to curcumin, acrylamide monomer (AA), and the crosslinking agent N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). Analysis of the real-time diffraction efficiency of these films shows a maximum of 16% for the sample with the highest curcumin concentration. Moreover, increasing the curcumin load enhanced the refractive index contrast from 7.8 × 10-4 for the photopolymer with the lowest curcumin load to 1.1 × 10-3 for the photopolymer with the largest load. The sensitivity and diffraction efficiency of the recorded gratings also increased from 7.0 to 9.8 cm·J-1 and from 7.9 to 16% with the increase in curcumin load, respectively. Finally, the influence of NaOH on the photopolymerization of the AA-curcumin-based sample shows a diffraction efficiency increase with the NaOH content, revealing that the curcumin enol form is more efficient as a photosensitizer.

RESUMO

Hydrogels are characterized by their property of absorbing and releasing a high content of water and water-based liquids; thus, they can be applied in agriculture as controlled-release water and fertilizer products. The focus of this research was efficient and low-cost natural polymer-based hydrogels obtained by crosslinking gellan gum (GGLA) and starch (ST) with acetic acid (CA) and loading them with either bentonite (BET) and/or halloysite (HAL). The hydrogels were obtained by mixing 100, 75, 50, 25, and 0 wt.% of GGLA with 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 wt.% ST water solutions. To obtain the networks, they were crosslinked with 10, 5, and 2 wt.% of CA and loaded with 2, 5, and 10 wt.% of BET and/or HAL. The samples were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), their swelling in water, and the state of bound water properties. The results of these analyses point to the formation of a polymeric network with a decomposition temperature of >250 °C, and tailorable swelling properties that vary between 3 and 77, depending on the hydrogel composition. In summary, GGLA-ST-BET/HAL hydrogels are a good option for eco-friendly agriculture materials.

RESUMO

Nanocomposite polymer electrolytes (NPEs) were obtained using gellan gum (GG) and 1 to 40 wt.% of montmorillonite (Na+SYN-1) clay. The NPEs were crosslinked with formaldehyde, plasticized with glycerol, and contained LiClO4. The samples were characterized by impedance spectroscopy, thermal analyses (TGA and DSC), UV-vis transmittance and reflectance, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW-EPR). The NPEs of GG and 40 wt.% LiClO4 showed the highest conductivity of 2.14 × 10-6 and 3.10 × 10-4 S/cm at 30 and 80 °C, respectively. The samples with 10 wt.% Na+SYN-1 had a conductivity of 1.86 × 10-5 and 3.74 × 10-4 S/cm at 30 and 80 °C, respectively. TGA analyses revealed that the samples are thermally stable up to 190 °C and this did not change with clay addition. The transparency of the samples decreased with the increase in the clay content and at the same time their reflectance increased. Finally, CW-EPR was performed to identify the coordination environment of Cu2+ ions in the GG NPEs. The samples doped with the lowest copper concentration exhibit the typical EPR spectra due to isolated Cu2+ ions in axially distorted sites. At high concentrations, the spectra become isotropic because of dipolar and exchange magnetic effects. In summary, GG/clay NPEs presented good ionic conductivity results, which qualifies them for electrochemical device applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Functional limitations after a stroke are unique to each person and often include impaired independent mobility. A reduction in existing gait deficits after a stroke is often one of the main goals of rehabilitation. Gait re-education after stroke is a complex process, which consists of the effects of many therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to analyze the effects of using a treadmill with visual feedback in gait re-education in the sub-acute stroke period and assess the impact of biofeedback treadmill training on selected gait parameters, improving static balance and reducing the need for orthopedic aids. METHODS: The study included 92 patients (F: 45, M: 47) aged 63 ± 12 years, with post-ischemic sub-acute (within six months onset) stroke hemiparesis, treated at a neurological rehabilitation ward. All patients participated in a specific rehabilitation program, and in addition, patients in the study group (n = 62) have a further 10 min of treadmill training with visual feedback. Patients in the control group (n = 30) participated in additional conventional gait training under the direct supervision of a physiotherapist. The evaluation of static balance was assessed with the Romberg Test. A Biodex Gait Trainer 3 treadmill with biofeedback function was used to evaluate selected gait parameters (walking speed, step length, % limb loading, and traveled distance). The use of an orthopedic aid (walker or a crutch) was noted. RESULTS: After four weeks of rehabilitation, step length, walking speed, traveled distance, and static balance were significantly improved for the study and control group (p < 0.05). Treadmill gait training yielded significantly better results than a conventional rehabilitation program. Only the study group observed a corrected walking base (p < 0.001). All participants showed a reduction in the use of walking aids (p = 0.006). There was no asymmetry in the % of limb loading for either group prior to or following rehabilitation. CONCLUSIONS: The treadmill with visual biofeedback as conventional gait training has resulted in a significant improvement in parameters such as step length, walking speed, static balance, and a reduction in the use of locomotion aids. However, the achieved improvement in gait parameters is still not in line with the physiological norm.

RESUMO

We deposited homogeneous, thin, yellow-colored films of chitosan (Chi)-N,N-dimethyl-4-(2-pyridylazo)aniline (PADA) dye from an acid Chi-PADA solution by spin-coating on glass substrates. We characterized Chi, PADA, and Chi-PADA films by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed a slight shift of 3170 and 3268 cm-1 bands, indicating H-bonding between the chitosan hydroxyl (OH) group and the amine (N) of the PADA pyridine ring. Based on these analyses, it was possible to determine the efficiency of the hydrogen bonds to form a Surface Relief Grating (SRG) on azo-polymer thin film. Moreover, we performed UV-VIS spectroscopy analysis of this film, which showed a broad band extending from 400 to 700 nm, with the maximum occurring at 428 nm. Therefore, we selected, within the absorption band, the 532 nm green laser wavelength to irradiate the azo-polymer films at room temperature. For the first time, natural polymer derivative and dye sample Chi-PADA thin films showed unique photoresponsive behavior under irradiation with two interfering laser beams. This permitted us to generate surface inscription patterning known as an SRG, which we confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and for which we determined a grating depth up to 50 nm. The present study opens the new possibility of using natural polymer-dye thin films.

RESUMO

Nanocomposite polymer electrolytes (NPEs) were synthesized using sodium alginate (Alg) and either sodium (SCa-3-Na+)- or lithium (SCa-3-Li+)-modified montmorillonite clays. The samples were characterized by structural, optical, and electrical properties. SCa-3-Na+ and SCa-3-Li+ clays' X-ray structural analyses revealed peaks at 2θ = 7.2° and 6.7° that corresponded to the interlamellar distances of 12.3 and 12.8 Å, respectively. Alg-based NPEs X-ray diffractograms showed exfoliated structures for samples with low clay percentages. The increase of clay content promoted the formation of intercalated structures. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy revealed that Alg-based NPEs with 5 wt% of SCa-3-Na+ clay presented the highest conductivity of 1.96 × 10-2 S/cm2, and Alg with 10 wt% of SCa-3-Li+ showed conductivity of 1.30 × 10-2 S/cm2, both measured at 70 °C. From UV-Vis spectroscopy, it was possible to infer that increasing concentration of clay promoted a decrease of the samples' transmittance and, consequently, an increase of their reflectance.

RESUMO

WO3 nanorods and wires were obtained via hydrothermal synthesis using sodium tungstate as a precursor and either oxalic acid, citric acid, or poly(methacrylic acid) as a stabilizing agent. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the organic acids with different numbers of carboxylic groups per molecule influence the final sizes and stacking nanostructures of WO3 wires. Three-dimensional electron diffraction tomography of a single nanocrystal revealed a hexagonal WO3 structure with preferential growth along the c-axis, which was confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. WO3 nanowires were also spin-coated onto an indium tin oxide/glass conducting substrate, resulting in the formation of a film that was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. Finally, cyclic voltammetry measurements performed on the WO3 thin film showed voltammograms typical for the WO3 redox process.

RESUMO

Polymer electrolytes were obtained by the casting technique from a solution containing chitosan, hydrochloric acid, and plasticizer such as glycerol, ethylene glycol, and sorbitol. The transparent membranes with good ionic conductivity properties were characterized by impedance and UV-vis spectroscopies, thermal analysis (DSC), and X-ray diffraction. The best ionic conductivity values of 9.5 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at room temperature and 2.5 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 80 degrees C were obtained for the sample containing 59 wt% of glycerol and an equimolar amount of HCl with respect to NH2 groups in chitosan. The temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity exhibits an Arrhenius behavior with activation energy of 16.6 kJ mol(-1). The thermal analysis indicates that both glass transition temperature (-87 degrees C) and crystallinity are low for this electrolyte. The samples with 13 wt% of LiCF3SO3 showed that the ionic conductivity values of 2.2 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) at room temperature and 4 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at 80 degrees C are predominantly amorphous and showed a low glass transition temperature of about -73 degrees C.
